ENGAGE
"Their World" vs "Real World"
Conversations with students provide the bridge for us to share our interests for our examples to meet "Their World." In time, Their World will meet our Real World through interest which is the underlying condition for engagement to exist.
Assumptions AKA Conventions begin to lose our students. Conventions are a human construct that were agreed upon and shared. We must continue to share these ideas to make them useful.
Math is not Knowing, instead it is SHOWING! I personally lead with this idea by example. If I think an idea is important enough for my students to write down then I should do the same on the board. Not skipping steps, while encouraging questions and clarifying concepts.
PURPOSE! - Lead each class & concept with purpose. At the heart of engagement purpose supports this idea. I get to know my students to align our interests so they can answer: "When am I ever going to use this?"
